You open the window and wait for a few minutes, but breathing does not feel any easier. The air still feels heavy, and the room remains stuffy. Why?

Because an open window does not always mean fresh air.

For a room to be properly ventilated, air needs to move: fresh air must come in while stale air leaves. If the ventilation system does not create enough airflow, simply opening a window may not solve the problem.

It Is Not Always About the Heat

A stuffy room is not necessarily a hot room. In an enclosed space, carbon dioxide and humidity gradually increase. That is why even a relatively cool room can feel uncomfortable.

This can become more noticeable in modern homes with airtight windows. Old windows allowed air to enter through small gaps — along with dust, noise, and cold drafts. Modern window systems provide much better protection, but they also require properly organized air exchange.

What Can You Do?

Start with the basics: check whether the ventilation outlets in your kitchen and bathroom are working properly. Instead of leaving a window slightly open for hours, try airing the room intensively by opening it fully for a few minutes.

On hot days, it is better to ventilate in the morning or evening, when the outdoor air is cooler.

And if the room becomes stuffy again soon after airing, the problem may not be the window at all. It could be about how air moves throughout your home.
