Who Invented Windows and Why? A Short History
05.04.2025
Today it is difficult to imagine a house without windows. We are so used to their presence that sometimes we do not think: when and why did people start making holes in the walls? Who was the first to decide that a house without light is not the best option, and what was the path from a stone opening to modern energy-efficient windows with multi-level protection?
The history of windows begins with simple openings in the homes of ancient people. Initially, these were just holes in the walls through which light entered the room and smoke exited. But such a "design" did not protect from rain, wind or cold. That is why already in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia they began to use the first prototypes of window sashes - wooden shutters that were closed at night or in bad weather.
With the development of civilizations, the idea arose to use transparent materials in windows. One of the first was alabaster and mica - translucent minerals that let in light but protected from the outside environment. It was only in the Roman Empire that the first glass appeared, which began to be inserted into the windows of wealthy houses. The glass of that time was cloudy, with unevenness, but it was a real breakthrough.
In the Middle Ages in Europe, window glass became increasingly popular, but was still a rarity - expensive, weak and difficult to produce. Therefore, stained glass or small glass fragments united by lead frames were often used. The real revolution happened during the Renaissance and especially in the 19th century, when the Industrial Revolution made it possible to mass-produce smooth and transparent window glass.
Since then, windows have ceased to be just a source of light. They have become part of architecture, an important element of thermal insulation, protection from noise, weather conditions and even lifestyle. Multi-chamber glass units, metal-plastic and aluminum profiles, burglar-proof fittings, automated ventilation systems have appeared. The window has become a technological element that affects the quality of life no less than furniture or utilities.
Today, when we talk about windows, we mean not just glass in a frame, but a complex structure that combines comfort, economy and safety. That is why at IMZO we approach the creation of windows as a high-tech process. We rely on global experience, but adapt solutions to the climate, architecture and needs of a modern resident of Uzbekistan. Our windows are the result of the development of a thousand-year history, combined with today's innovations.
So, if you think about who invented windows - it was not one person. It was man himself as a species: striving for light, warmth, beauty and safety. And we at IMZO continue this story, making it modern, reliable and close to every home.
