How Long Do Modern Windows Really Last? Debunking the Myths
25.02.2026
The lifespan of windows is one of the most common questions buyers ask. Some believe plastic windows last no more than 10 years, while others think they last a lifetime. The truth lies somewhere in between and depends on several important factors.
Modern window systems are typically designed to last 30-40 years. This applies to high-quality profiles manufactured according to proper standards, with adequate wall thickness and resistance to UV exposure and temperature changes. PVC or aluminum does not simply “wear out” after 10-15 years. When properly maintained, the frame retains its strength and shape for decades.
However, a window is more than just a profile. The glass unit, hardware, seals, and installation quality all influence overall durability. A sealed double- or triple-glazed unit can last 20-30 years. Quality hardware may function for 15-25 years with periodic adjustments. Seals can lose elasticity over time, but they can be replaced without removing the entire window.
One common myth is that windows inevitably start to draft after five to seven years. In reality, drafts are usually caused by poor installation or lack of maintenance rather than aging materials. Regular inspection and minor adjustments significantly extend window performance.
Another misconception is that sunlight quickly damages plastic frames. Modern profiles contain UV stabilizers that prevent yellowing and cracking under normal conditions.
Durability ultimately depends on manufacturing standards and professional installation. Even the best materials cannot compensate for poor assembly or incorrect mounting. That is why warranties and experienced installers are essential.
Modern windows are a long-term investment. With proper selection and maintenance, they can serve reliably for decades, maintaining comfort, insulation, and appearance.
